Locating Your Septic System
Locating your septic tank can be a challenging task, especially if there are no risers in your yard indicating where it may be. Before going into your backyard to start probing the ground, check on the following:
-Ask the past homeowner if they know where it is.
-Contact the local Health Department to see if they have records of your septic tank installation.
-Call us! (440) 748-3838 to see if we have serviced your tank in the past and have the location of the tank on file.
However, if you feel you still want to find the septic tank yourself, a good starting point for finding it is to look in the crawl space or basement to see the direction in which the house sewer pipe enters the soil. The septic tank is generally 10-20 feet away from this point outside of the house. A septic tank measures 4.5 feet wide, 8 feet long and 6 feet tall and is typically buried anywhere from 4 inches to 4 feet deep. Using a metal probe to poke the grass will help you find the buried lid. Be careful! Poking too hard can cause pipes to break or the lid to crack. There may also be ground utilities such as buried electrical cables in the area that you have to watch out for too. In this case, please call your local utility company to make sure there is nothing around your shouldn't be poking at.
If walking around your back yard and poking the ground does not sound fun to you, give us a call and we will do it for you! (440) 748-3838
